Did you notice the 2 minutes of black out during the Seattle Sounders FC at New York Red Falls? Neither did I, we were all probably too drunk. 2 minutes into stoppage time the ball fell in front of Lamar Neagle after Goal Keeper Slappy Sutton deflected Fredy Montero's free kick. Neagle set the ball with his knee and let it bounce once before taking a shot directly in front of the goal. Perfect position, perfect chance with the goalie still off balance from the free kick deflection. Neagle's shot went sailing over the goal, not even close. However, what many of us did not see is that the goal was replaced minutes earlier with a 2 feet high 4 feet wide goal, corresponding with new MLS rules for the 2011 season... "rule 21 b: before the referee can spray lines on the pitch prior to free kicks in stoppage time the goal must be replaced with an outstretched fishing net on poles." While it may have looked like Neagle kicked the ball 250 feet in the air while he was within 3 yards of the goal he really would have kicked it in the top right corner for a well finished game tying goal in stoppage time! "It's not my fault", said Neagle after the game. "I thought it was a normal sized net, I mean i just subbed in... How was I supposed to know?"
